Evergreen Content Strategy for Businesses

Hi, Dave from Starscape SEO here. In the fast-paced world of digital marketing, content can either capture a fleeting trend or become a long-lasting resource.

Evergreen content, which remains relevant and valuable over time, serves as a cornerstone of successful content marketing strategies.

I should know, as I’ve based many a blog on this concept, and it has generally worked very well. Indeed, this website uses that concept to, just so you’re aware! 😎

The Nature of Evergreen Content

Content can be divided into two main types: timely and evergreen.

Timely content, such as news articles, social media posts, or trend-driven blogs, is designed to capture a moment or respond to current events.

While it can generate immediate engagement, its relevance often fades as the topic loses its prominence.

In contrast, evergreen content addresses deep-seated information or timeless truths.

This type of content is perpetually valuable because it answers fundamental questions or provides enduring insights.

Examples include how-to guides, tutorials, industry best practices, and educational resources that remain useful regardless of when they are accessed.

The Connection Between Evergreen Content and Blog Marketing

Evergreen content is particularly effective when integrated into a broader blog marketing strategy.

Blogs are ideal platforms for publishing evergreen content because they allow businesses to build a knowledge base that users can return to repeatedly.

This not only drives consistent traffic to the website but also helps establish the business as an authority in its field.

By regularly producing and updating evergreen content, a business can create a repository of resources that attract and engage its target audience over time.

Of course, going back to the timely content idea, evergreen content has the potential drawback that it has been done to death, and covered by everyone, while timely or “news” content is more “up-for-grabs” as everyone who produces content is trying to beat everyone else to the punch.

For example, a blog post about “Best Practices for Local SEO” will continue to draw readers as long as the information remains accurate and useful, so long as it hasn’t been covered a million times, but even then, it can be saved by Local SEO, which I’ll talk about momentarily.

All in all, as search engines prioritize content that is both relevant and authoritative, these evergreen posts can significantly improve a website’s SEO performance.

The Connection Between Evergreen Content and Local SEO

So, the thing you should know about evergreen content and Local SEO is this: if everyone out there in Google, from all parts of the Earth, have talked about a topic – let’s say Bigfoot sightings – then your blog about it won’t be as popular on the global scale, because the topic has been covered plenty online.

Just think about the fact that there are probably 100’s of videos about Bigfoot sightings already out there, not to mention blog posts on random websites, not to mention forums, not to mention Bigfoot fan club websites.

On the global scale, maybe you can’t compete, eh?

But now consider Local SEO, meaning your local area, or city.  Google takes that into consideration when someone searches a topic, so long as that topic relates to the geographical area you are in.

There is an line, which actually is a part of Google’s algorithm (the literal code), where a search switches from being “local” to being “global”.

If you live in Cambridge and type “Bigfoot sightings Cambridge”, and I have a business in Cambridge with a picture of Bigfoot on my website, you probably will see my picture first, because I’m nearby.

You might even see my picture of Bigfoot if you type in “Bigfoot sightings”, and Google knows that both of us are in Cambridge.  The line gets a bit blurry because, like I said, at some point Google knows you don’t want a “local” result, and just shows you everything the world has to offer.

As a business owner with a blog, or even with a Youtube channel, your goal might be to rank for any keyword related to topic of your business, to anyone searching locally for that information.  This is the tricky thing to understand, but it’s the important part of the equation.

If I have a nail salon, and I have a blog about nail products or nail techniques, I want anyone in the area that cares about nail products to find me before it finds results online in on the wider web.

This is done by establishing, to Google, that you are a source for that type of evergreen content, and so if anyone in your region searches, Google offers them you first.

Building Trust and Authenticity Through Evergreen Content

Evergreen content also plays a critical role in building trust and demonstrating expertise.

When businesses share in-depth knowledge on topics within their industry, they offer value that goes beyond selling products or services.

This content gives potential clients insight into the company’s values, expertise, and thought processes, helping to build a relationship based on trust.

For example, a business that consistently publishes well-researched articles on its blog is likely to be perceived as knowledgeable and credible. Over time, this establishes the business as a go-to resource, fostering customer loyalty and increasing the likelihood of repeat visits.

Evergreen Content vs. Social Media: Complementary Strategies

While platforms like Twitter and TikTok offer a glimpse into what a business might be thinking or reacting to in the moment, evergreen content provides lasting value.

Social media content often has a short lifespan, driven by algorithms that prioritize the latest posts.

In contrast, evergreen content remains accessible and relevant, serving as a foundation that supports other marketing efforts.

Videos, infographics, and blogs are prime examples of evergreen content that can be revisited time and again.

When executed properly, these formats not only attract new visitors but also encourage repeat engagement, as users return to reference the content.

Conclusion

An evergreen content strategy is essential for businesses looking to build a long-term online presence.

By focusing on creating content that remains valuable over time, businesses can enhance their blog marketing efforts, build trust with their audience, and establish themselves as industry leaders.

While social media can capture the moment, evergreen content ensures that a business’s voice is heard long after the initial conversation has ended.
